Veneers Q & A

What are Dental Veneers?

Veneers are a thin, strong covering applied to the surface of a tooth to help correct a wide range of issues, including teeth that are cracked, worn or chipped, as well as helping to close gaps and create an appearance of a straighter, healthier smile. They're also commonly used to correct teeth that have become permanently discolored.

How are Dental Veneers Applied?

Before veneers are applied, the tooth surface needs to be prepared using a special etching solution that makes the surface rough so it will bond better with the veneer material. Depending on the thickness of the veneer, you may also have to have your tooth shaped and some material removed so the veneer does not make your tooth look or feel “thick.” Once the tooth is prepared, the veneer is applied with a special bonding adhesive designed specifically to withstand rigorous daily chewing and biting. Most veneer applications require two procedures – one to prepare the tooth and apply a temporary cover while the veneer is being prepared, and a second visit to apply the veneer.

How Long do Veneers Last?

Veneers are made of very strong material, designed to withstand the daily pressures and strains of biting and chewing. With proper care, including regular dental visits to ensure their bond is remaining intact, you can expect your veneers to last for many, many years.

Will a Veneer Match the Rest of my Teeth?

Yes. Today's materials can easily be custom-tinted so they “fit in” with the rest of your teeth.

Do Veneers Require Special Care?

No; you care for dental veneers the same way you care for your natural teeth, with regular brushing and flossing. While veneers are designed to resist staining, it's still a good idea to avoid foods and beverages known to cause stains. They're designed to be very easy to care for, even after years of use.
