Bridges Q & A
What Is a Dental Bridge?
A bridge is like a false tooth used to replace a missing tooth or teeth. It sits in the space where you are missing a tooth, and is attached using crowns to the surrounding two teeth, known as abutment teeth. The false tooth is called a pontic, and it can be gold, porcelain, or alloys. Benefits of dental bridges can include the following:
- Help you chew normally and without pain.
- Keep your teeth from shifting out of their normal positions.
- Restore your smile.
What is the Process for Getting a Dental Bridge?
The process usually takes two trips to the dentist. During the first preparatory visit, the dentist gets your abutment teeth ready by preparing them to receive crowns, which involves taking impressions in order to create your customized crowns and bridge. You will receive a temporary bridge until the permanent one is ready.
When the permanent bridge is ready, you will return to the office and have the temporary bridge removed. The dentist will make any necessary adjustments to the new bridge. Once the bridge fits, the dentist will simply cement the permanent bridge in place.
How Do You Care for a Bridge?
Keeping your dental bridge clean and maintaining good oral hygiene to keep your abutment teeth strong is important to keep your bridge functioning well. You can care for your dental bridge by continuing a good oral hygiene routine. Brush your teeth at least twice a day, and floss at least once per day. Avoid very sticky, sugary, or starchy foods, such as candy, soft drinks, and other sweets. Be sure to rinse your mouth with water after you eat anything so no food sticks to your teeth.
